Closing the Gap

Like the fingers in the dome

of the Chapel in Rome

my spirit stretches

as far as I know how

to reach the Spirit

who, they say, is seeking me.

Most days the space between

seems an uncrossable chasm.

How can my human flesh

touch holy existence?

How can I trust

that I am being sought

even as I seek?

Still I extend myself

beyond the limit

of human definition.

I lean into the space between --

the place of hope.

Only then do I

feel the magnetic pull

that closes the gap –

between the cross

and the empty tomb.
